ABOUT OWEN JAMES

I am an associate lawyer at Marshall Massey & Alberto (MMA), a Full-Service Criminal Law Office located in the heart of Victoria, British Columbia. Having appeared in the Supreme Court and Provincial Court of British Columbia, I am a confident advocate. I have practiced in Victoria since my call to the Bar, working primarily in criminal law, but also taking on select family law cases.

CAREER PATH

After completing my Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at the University of Victoria, I spent several years working for the Provincial Government in various policy and statistical analysis roles, with a focus on decreasing and offsetting public sector emissions. I returned to the University of Victoria for my Law Degree, graduating in 2021.

During my studies at the University of Victoria Law School, I focused on criminal law, taking every course I could on the subject. I represented the University at the Macintyre Cup, a criminal trial advocacy moot, where my team placed third and I was recognized for delivering the best closing submissions in the competition. I also volunteered my time with the Pro Bono Students of Canada, working on several projects, and was a founding member and vice-president of the Sports and Entertainment Law Club.

At the University, I had the privilege of taking Criminal Procedure from the senior partner at Marshall Massey & Alberto, Dale Marshall. After my studies were complete, I articled at the firm under my principal Roberto Alberto. I returned full-time as an associate after my qualification exams.

EXPERIENCE

Focusing my practice nearly exclusively on criminal law has accelerated my experience in all aspects of this area, including appeals, trials, bail hearings, sentencings, IRP reviews, traffic tickets, relocation hearings, firearms seizure applications, preliminary inquiries, and more. I can be found in the Victoria, Nanaimo, Western Communities, and Duncan law courts on an almost daily basis.

When I am not in court, I can usually be found renovating my house, at the gym, or being walked by my two Rottweilers, Nero and Caligula.
